Dreamweaver 4 or Dreamweaver Ultradev
4
Note: This support page assumes
your website is hosted with us, if your website is hosted elsewhere
then the settings provided below
may not
work!
The screenshots on this page were taken from Dreamweaver Ultradev 4, if
you have a different version you should still be able to use this page
because different
Dreamweaver versions are very similar to setup.

 |
1. |
| |
To setup FTP within Dreamweaver
you must define the local & remote site details. To do this start Dreamweaver
and access the "Site Map". Depending on your version when you
start Dreamweaver it may open immediantly to the Site Map, or you can get
to it by selecting the "Site" drop menu, followed by "Define
Sites". Alt-F8 or Alt-F5 (depending on your version) will also get
you to the Site Map. |

2. |

| Click on the down arrow next to the "Site" selection
list, at the base of that list you will find "Define Sites...",
select it. |

Select "New".
The screen below will appear, you will need to enter the details
that are marked in red. If you don't have a HTTP Address at this
stage just leave it blank. |

Now move to the "Remote
Info" screen. Enter your domain name in "FTP Host",
Enter httpdocs/ into "Host Directory" and your Login/Password
as written in your hosting application. |

5. |

Now skip down to the "Site Map Layout" screen.
All you need to do on this page is find the "Home Page" of
your website using the yellow directory. If you don't want to fill
out this screen at the moment, do it later once your website design
has started. The "Home Page" should be either index.htm,
index.html, index.php, default.htm, default.html or index.php. |

6. Setup of FTP is
now complete. |
| |
Click "OK" to close the "Site
Definition" window.
There are a number of ways to transfer files but the quickest way is to use
your mouse and drag and drop much the same as you would in a File manager program.
You can also use Dreamweaver "Sycronizing" which can be found by
selecting the "Site" drop menu followed by "Syncronize...".
This function will have a look at the files on your computer and the ones on
the web server, then it will work out which files have been changed and only
update those files. Very handy if you don't want to transfer your whole website
everytime.
Note: Be patient with Dreamweaver if you
use the Syncronizing method, once you start the process don't try
and multitask with other programs otherwise it is hard to get the
Syncronizing progress screen to return and you don't know how much
has been done until it finishes the file transfer! |
